Analyzing Character Traits

We have been reading excerpts from Tom Sawyer the past few weeks. Today we began comparing and contrasting character traits based upon both their dialogue and actions.  While maintaining our social distancing, students held discussions as they analyzed portions of this week's text.

Nature's Recyclers

In science, we started a long-term observation lab where we set up a mini-ecosystem today and will place composting worms in (red wigglers) on Wednesday.  The goal is to observe how nature "recycles" items such as leaves, left over food waste, and even paper.

Iroquois Dances

After studying the Iroquois and their Rabbit Dance, students got into groups and creating a dance that honored an animal they felt early Native Americans could have created a dance for.  We performed these dances on Friday.

Physical Education: Disc Golf

In P.E. this year we will work on a variety of different units that helps students become educated in different sports and skills.  We are starting off with disc golf.  Today we learned the basics of a backhand and a forehand throw.  Each student found a "target" around 20 yards away and worked on accuracy.  Next, we learned some techniques for throwing the discs a further distance.

Back To School: Covid-19 Style

Although there is are many changes in how things take place in our society, as well as at the elementary school, when dealing with Covid-19, I am excited for this year to begin. School officially starts on Monday, August 17th at 8:55 (tardy bell rings at 9:00. We have NEW classroom number signs, so it should be easy to find room C-5. Can't wait to see you all (I do have a big smile going on, just hard to tell).

Pi Day a Success

On Friday, March 13th (one day before actual Pi Day on March 14th), the 5th graders celebrated and learned what Pi is all about. Taking a variety of pies of all sizes, students measured the circumference and diameter and then after dividing realized that the circumference of a circle is about 3 times that of the diameter. In fact, it is about 3.14 times. After math, students showed that they not only know Pi is 3.14, but that it is an irrational number that goes on forever. Our Pi Memorization Contest took 40 minutes to get through everyone. The top place goes to Zachary this year, as he memorized 126 digits of Pi in only 5 days. Jolie, Sophie, Valorie, Tyler and Jake also placed in the top 5, all memorizing 53 digits or more and even resulting in a tie for 5th place.

Crazy Hair Day

Thursday was crazy hair day, and boy did we have some craziness. We took the photo in the morning, as some students were not sure their hair would last until the end of the day. All in the name of fun for reading!
